Dozens of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are to be elected across England and Wales following elections on Thursday.

Police living in areas including Northumbria, Lancashire, Durham, North Wales, Cheshire and Merseyside are all turning out to the polls to elect a new representative.

The role of a PCC is to make sure the police force in the area is efficient and effective and they hold the chief constable to account for the delivery of the police and crime plan. They are responsible for the appointment, and if necessary, the suspension and dismissal of a Chief Constable.

A PCC is also charged with holding the police fund and raising the local policing precept from council tax.

A number of PPCs have the added responsibility of overseeing fire and rescue services in those areas. Areas where there is a PFCC include Cumbria, Essex, Northamptonshire, North Yorkshire and Staffordshire.

The role is a paid position with the salary different in each region - but ranging from around £70,000 to £90,000. Not every area has a PCC and the role is absorbed by the elected mayors in West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and London.

This year's PCC election is the first to use the first past the post system following the passage of the Elections Act 2022. Previous PCC elections used the supplementary vote system.

In total there are 37 PCC elections took place on Thursday, May 2. Here is when the results are expected for each one.
