Protect PT hike in Murrysville

Citizen environmental group Protect PT and the Turtle Creek Watershed and Airshed Communities will host a May 18 hike in Murrysville’s Duff Park.

It will be at 10 a.m. Local residents will share their connection to the park and advocate for regional green spaces.

Hikers will leave from the trailhead near the Airgas building, 4349 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Aria412 at Symphony East

The Symphony East’s May 20 program will include four vocalists and piano accompaniment from Aria412, which began producing monthly cabaret opera and musical theater shows in 2017.

It will be at 1 p.m. at the Lamplighter, 6566 Route 66 in Salem, and is open to the public. No reservations are required; a $10 donation is requested.

Quilt class

The Delmont Historical Preservation Society will host a May 18 quilt class for beginners.

It will be at 10 a.m. at the Delmont Public Library, 75 School St. The fee is $35 cash or check and includes the instruction and materials to make a complete barn quilt. The quilts are painted, not sewn.

AAUW speaker will focus on book bans

The American Association of University Women will host guest speaker Fran Bogos, a reading and curriculum specialist with a 38-year career in teaching, to discuss book banning at its May 9 meeting.

Over the years Bogos has worked in the McKeesport and North Allegheny school districts. She will discuss book bans through history and how the concept has arisen at school districts in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

The public is invited to attend, and no registration is required. The meeting will be in the TechNook at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Filipino missionary featured at ‘Boomers & Beyond’

The Mother of Sorrows “Boomers & Beyond” speaker series will feature triathlete, Ironman contender, Air Force reservist and Catholic priest the Rev. Jay Jacinto on May 14.

Jacinto is currently on missionary assignment at Mother of Sorrows, and will discuss the transformation he underwent during his vocational journey.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Participants can bring a bag lunch and a friend. Beverages are provided.

The church is at 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

FR receives 6th consecutive music education recognition

The National Association of Music Merchants recognized the Franklin Regional School District for the sixth year in a row in 2024 with its “Best Communities for Music Education” designation.

The designation is awarded to districts demonstrating outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to its students.

Youth praise night fundraiser

Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church will host a May 10 Youth Praise Night as a fundraiser for its youth summer events and camps.

It will be at 6 p.m. and will include trivia games, prizes, cookies and lemonade along with a worship band performance. All middle- and high-school student are invited to attend.

Garden club plant sale

The Murrysville Garden Club will host its annual plant sale beginning at 11 a.m. May 9. The sale will last until the plants are gone, and will be at the Murrysville Volunteer Fire Company pavilion, 3235 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

The club is selling annuals, perennials and hanging baskets in addition to propagated plants, second-hand tools and garden decor. Proceeds will benefit the club’s scholarship program for students in college or technical school pursuing studies in horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, environmental science or a similar field.

At 2:30 p.m., club members will conduct demonstrations on dividing plants, and at 5:30 p.m. Crystal Volchko of Rust Belt Natives will host a short talk about native Pennsylvania plants.

The club’s regular meetings are at 10:30 a.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month from March through November, at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road, Murrysville.

Medic One subscription drive

Murrysville Medic One is hosting a second round of subscription drive mailings for families in its service areas of Murrysville, Export, Washington Township and parts of Upper Burrell.

Roughly 30% of residents maintain a subscription to the service, according to Medic One officials.

A Medic One subscription is $75 for families and $55 for senior families. Subscribers will have their co-pay forgiven by Medic One.

The nonprofit service operates eight ambulances, four wheelchair vans, two all-terrain vehicle, two boats, seven trailers, an emergency support unit and a dive team.

STREAM Expo

Franklin Regional school officials will host a May 15 STREAM Expo at their intermediate school which will be open to the community.

It will be from 6-8:30 p.m. at FR Intermediate School, 4125 Sardis Road in Murrysville, and will feature themed activities for students in kindergarten through grade 8. There is no cost to attend, and a list of courses and activity sign-ups is available through May 6 at FRSDk12.org. Kona Ice and Tom’s Coffee Truck will also be on hand.

Native plant presentation

The Delmont Public Library will host Penn State Extension Master Gardeners for a June 29 presentation, “Know Your Native Plants,” at 10 a.m. June 29.

Master gardeners will discuss native plants which can add to biodiversity in local backyards and maximize benefits for wildlife.

Rummage sale

Union Presbyterian Church will host a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the church, 656 Route 380 in Murrysville.

Free mountain biking session

The PA Interscholastic Cycling League will host a May 11 “Mountain Bike Try-It” event open to all Franklin Regional students entering grades 6-12 who are interested in learning more about the FR Mountain Biking Team.

It will be from 1-3 p.m. at Franklin Regional Senior High School, 3200 School Road in Murrysville. Discover mountain biking through games and activities led by licensed mountain bike coaches.
