Voters in Gateshead have been going to the polls on 2024's local election day to choose their councillors.

On what is a bumper polling day across the region that also includes the historic North East mayor election, Gateshead is one of the five areas in Tyne and Wear staging local council votes. You can find all the results on our dedicated local elections page here.

Labour has maintained dominance in Gateshead, conceding just one seat to the Liberal Democrats by single digits. However, this marks a second loss for Labour in Birtley, a seat which has proved controversial owing to the closure of the Birtley pool last year.

Plans are, however, afoot to reopen it this coming September. The Greens fought hard in Bridges but ultimately fell short to a Labour majority of 290.

Labour also made significant gains in Whickham South and Sunniside, slashing the Lib Dem hold on the seat to just a 136 majority. The political makeup of the council now stands at 48 Labour councillors, to 18 Liberal Democrats.

Our widget below will update on local election night as Gateshead results are declared - and you can also search it by postcode or council name to see results for other councils.
