Wrexham has once again proven that fairytales exist with the Welsh club securing promotion to League One. This has to be one of the biggest stories of the season considering the team’s start to the season. Wrexham toured the United States during their pre-season campaign, something that was more than enough to bring the team back to the grassroots.

The pre-season tour saw Wrexham take on the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, pitting the newly-minted team against some of the Premier League heavyweights. Co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds described the routing at the hands of Chelsea in the opening episode of Welcome to Wrexham S3.

The ‘Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ star stated, “What wasn’t fun was seeing the divide – to very clearly see the divide between where we’re at and where we would like to be. When we played Chelsea, it was a pretty stark reminder of the difference. I believe we lost 27-0, 28-0 [It was actually 5-0]. We got smacked around a bit. They gave us 90 minutes of shut the f**k up.”

The pre-season tour brought more harrowing news for the team, with star striker Paul Mullins picking up a career-threatening injury against Manchester United. His absence was pretty evident in the team’s opening games, with the side failing to make the most of their attacking chances. However, once he was back, it didn’t take him long to get fans chanting his name at the top of their lungs.

Wrexham superstar Paul Mullin closed League Two on a historic note

The Welsh striker had a historic League Two run despite missing the initial six games for the team. Following his return, Mullin hit the ground running, bagging 24 goals to his name. The player finished 3rd on the Golden Boot rankings, just 4 goals behind top scorer Macaulay Langstaff. Mullin has been the go-to man for Wrexham, with the fans and the club firmly behind the player.
