The unnamed school sent an email to parents warning them of the "serious online safety issue" involving a number of P6 and P7 pupils, as reported by STV.

The youngsters were then sent sexual images on the popular messaging app last weekend.

Police said that they received a report on Wednesday.

Parents have been told that if their child was in the group and viewed the material then they would be contacted by school bosses.

Teachers and support staff have been made aware of the alarming incident.

They will be helping children impacted through "supportive conversations", the school has said.

A police probe is underway and officers' enquiries are continuing.

Chief Inspector Paul Gillespie said: “On Wednesday, 1 May, 2024 we received a report of inappropriate images sent to children in Edinburgh.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this matter.”

The National Crime Agency has issued advice to teachers about the rising threat of sextortion.

Schools have been urged to educate pupils about the potential dangers posed to them.

Sextortion involves blackmail using intimate pictures, with male victims aged 14 to 18 being targeted significantly.
