India Elections 2024: India, the world’s biggest democracy, is in election mode with third phase of voting starting on May 7. A total of 1,332 candidates will try their luck for 93 seats in Tuesday’s polling for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Amid the simmering political season in India, the weather is set to bring some respite from the scorching heat.

Rainfall is expected in West Bengal and many northeastern states (many of which will be voting on May 7) on Tuesday, the latest forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The ease in rising temperature might reflect on polling day with better turnout in the 11 states voting on Tuesday.

Rainfall prediction in West Bengal ahead of polling

Several districts in West Bengal received rainfall on Monday after the mercury crossed 40 degrees Celsius in the state. Rainfall is expected to continue over the state for the next few days, bringing down the temperature, the IMD said.

The Met Department also said thunderstorms with gusty winds will occur in several districts of West Bengal till May 10. Moreover, multiple cyclonic circulations near northeastern states are likely to bring light to moderate rainfall in Assam on polling day, as per IMD.

The southern westerly winds carrying moisture from the Bay of Bengal will travel to eastern India, IMD said, and bring moderate to heavy rains in multiple districts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Assam this week.

Heatwave conditions persist in other parts

The weather agency further predicted that heatwave conditions will persist in Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand this week, with maximum temperatures recorded to be 4-7 degrees Celsius above normal on Monday.

IMD issued an "orange alert" in several districts of Karnataka that are set to go to polls on Tuesday, as temperatures hit 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in the past few days. Odisha and Karnataka are predicted to record temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on polling day in Phase 3 of the Lok Sabha elections.

Phase 3 polling will seal the fate of many heavyweights like Union Ministers Amit Shah, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mansukh Mandaviya.
