Roman Kemp’s breakfast show on Capital Radio broke Ofcom rules - over an unexpected swear word.

The 31-year-old radio host was the star of Capital FM’s morning breakfast show from 2017 until he quit earlier this year. And it seems he has gone out of the studio under a slight raincloud of controversy as his show has been found to have breached strict broadcasting rules when there was a slip up on the morning of 8 February.

During that episode, Roman was joined by guests Michael Buble and Jason Derulo - although their interview that aired was prerecorded. As part of their chat, Roman played a mash up of 48-year-old Michael’s songs with 34-year-old Jason’s tracks - when a swear word made its way into the final edit.

Jason’s 2020 song Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat) was among the music that was mixed together and the F-word was broadcast out to listeners at 7:30am as a result. The blunder dragged Capital into disrepute and an Ofcom investigation was launched and they have now ruled that rules were broken due to the inclusion of the swear word.

Global Radio Limited, who own Capital FM, said: “During the checking of the content, the swear word complained about within the Jason Derulo song Savage Love was missed”. And the organisation went on to claim that the team responsible for checking the content of pre-recorded interviews failed to spot the expletive as they “believed the lyric was something else entirely.”

The inclusion of the F-bomb was ruled to be particularly bad as Capital FM's Breakfast Show broadcasts at a time when children are particularly likely to be listening. Jason Derulo fans will be aware that his smash hit - which reached number 1 in the UK and USA as well as many other countries around the world - includes the F-Bomb not once, not twice, but thrice over the course of the track and copies of the song are clearly marked as containing explicit content.

Capital Breakfast is broadcast daily on weekdays from 6am-10am across Capital’s network of 11 local radio stations, as well as nationally on Capital’s DAB service. Back in February, Roman stunned fans when he announced he was quitting the breakfast show after seven years of service.

He later revealed he was struggling to work in the studios that he used to share with producer and close friend Joe Lyons who tragically took his own life in August 2020. Discussing his decision to step away from Capital Breakfast in April, Roman said: "It's not normal, imagine a tragedy happened in your house, you're going to want to move. The bosses at Capital know this and I said it, it's difficult, I went through such a horrible moment in that room, in that studio - four years on and I've been living that same day over and over again, without the awful event.

"For me, I'm quite ready to go, 'okay, close that door now, don't keep going back living that horrible day over again'. That's sad that it obviously affects me but it does. Every day I walk in there and I see Joe - that's a weird thing to do. I think it's going to be really good for me to move on with my life. I had an opportunity in my life, I can go and enjoy my life for a bit and I want to enjoy what I have achieved." The show is now hosted by Jordan North, Chris Stark & Siân Welby.
