A supermarket was evacuated as large numbers of emergency services descended on the scene after a shopper was taken ill.

Customers were reportedly asked to leave the Tesco superstore this afternoon (May 7) as part of a major emergency response in Greenfield, north-east of Manchester. Multiple emergency crews attended as shop staff frantically gave first aid until help arrived.

An air ambulance was among the vehicles sent out to the supermarket as part of a major emergency response. North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) confirmed it was called out to the supermarket, on Chew Valley Road in Greenfield, Saddleworth, at 12.06pm.

A spokesman for NWAS confirmed that a “man has been taken to hospital after falling ill”. An air ambulance was among the vehicles sent out to the supermarket as part of a major emergency response. "An ambulance, a response vehicle, a critical care Helimed team, an advanced paramedic, and a senior paramedic all attended," the NWAS spokesman added.

Multiple witnesses reported that a man had fallen ill at a checkout inside the supermarket. Staff reportedly evacuated the store to allow the emergency services to carry out their work, the Manchester Evening News reported.

It's understood Tesco staff gave first aid to the man before the ambulance crew arrived. The supermarket reopened following the incident.

Meanwhile, members of the public in Manchester were evacuated from another building in recent days. Patients were forced to leave Stepping Hill Hospital in Greater Manchester twice after two ceiling collapses over recent weeks. Both collapses happened inside the radiology department and the critical care unit. Seriously ill patients receive intensive and high-dependency treatments in the wards.

The two ceiling collapses follow the 'immediate' complete closure of the hospital’s Outpatient B department in November. The closure came because of a ‘significant deterioration of the structure of the building’, according to inspectors.

The ceilings keep falling down because of heating-system leaks according to managers at the trust. Staff had to move quickly to get patients out of the 13-bed unit to ensure no one was hurt. Evacuated patients were initially cared for in some of Stepping Hill’s 20 operating theatres. Some were then reportedly transferred to a nearby hospital while repairs were carried out.
