When Zoe Saldaña stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet last night—standing proudly with a cohort of Chloé-dressed women, including Sienna Miller, Greta Gerwig, Emma Mackey, and Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali—one question permeated through ELLE’s Slack channel: What is this new girl band, and how can we join?
The sweet crew held hands as they posed together, all dressed in varying neutrals: whites, blacks, browns, and creams. For this year’s gala, the dress code was “The Garden of Time,” in celebration of the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Saldaña, in particular, looked effortless in a sheer nude dress, brown boots, and a gold belt that spelled out Chloé, styled by Petra Flannery. “Petra and I have worked together for almost 20 years,” Saldaña tells ELLE.com. “Every event, every outfit, is always a great experience.” Kamali’s latest collection for Chloé also gave the actor a particularly powerful feeling: “Beautiful in my own skin; safe and comfortable in my body.”
To complement the dress, she wore her hair, styled by Aviva Perea and Cassie Russek, down in easy waves, and completed her look with makeup by Vera Steimberg. It’s just the start of what will be a red carpet-heavy spring for Saldaña, as her upcoming musical crime comedy, Emilia Perez, will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this May.
For now, take a behind-the-scenes look at how she got ready for fashion’s biggest night.
