A CORONATION Street star's aunt has sunk their claws into the soap - swiping 'if not for him I'd have switched off years ago!'

In recent months, the ITV soap has come under fire from some fans who feel it has lost its way and is full of dark, miserable storylines.

Now one of the cast's own relatives has taken aim at Coronation Street on social media.

Jude Riordan has played Nick Tilsley's son Sam Blakeman since October 2020.

But taking to X - formerly Twitter - his aunt responded to a post which revealed soap ratings for the end of April.

It stated that Emmerdale was up by 100k, EastEnders was up by 510k but Coronation Street was down 280k from the same time last year.

She replied: "My nephew plays Sam in corrie but I'll be honest with you, if it weren't for him I'd have switched off years ago."

When another Twitter user replied how good Jude was, she responded: "Aww thank you . He's a lovely kid and actually quite shy would you believe?!"

While Jude's aunt didn't have great things to say about Coronation Street, the same could not be said for EastEnders, which she showered with praise following a special two-hander episode between Patrick and Yolande Trueman.

She wrote: "Tonight's #EastEnders will stick with me for a long time.

"Hopefully it will educate people, as sexual assault can happen to anyone of any age.

"As Yolande pointed out, her generation wasn't taught about consent, they just had to shut up and get on with it. Absolutely heartbreaking."

Sam Blakeman admits he feels sick after shock car crash in Coronation Street

In recent months, Coronation Street has come under fire for a dead baby storyline involving Toyah Battersby, branding it "repulsive".

They have also raged at the storyline involving Lauren Bolton's disappearance and Roy Cropper's imprisonment for the crime.

Former stars of the soap have also made their feelings on the current situation at Corrie clear.

This year, Jim McDonald actor Charlie Lawson dubbed the series “woke” and told The Sun that he believes the late Tony Warren, who wrote the scripts in Corrie’s heyday, would be horrified.

While Vicky Entwistle - who played Toyah's mum Janice Battersby - slammed the show's writers for rewriting her on-screen daughter's history.

Coronation Street's shock exits 2024

Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap:

Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany.

The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza's grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life.

Paul Foreman will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes.

After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite, portrayed by Peter Ash, was devastated to learn he only had months left to live.

Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering.

Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America.

Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul’s impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full.

Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles.

The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend.

Simon's been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy.

Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child.

It looks likely she'll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind.

Show stalwart Eileen Grimshaw is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour.

She's had to leave the Street immediately after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
