Bridgerton boss reveals Penelope and Colin ‘go further’ with sex scenes as Nicola Coughlan spills on ‘intimidating’ role

BRIDGERTON star Nicole Coughlan has admitted the sex scenes in the show intimidate her.
Unfortunately for her, the showrunner revealed that her character, Penelope Featherington, and her on-screen love, Colin Bridgerton, with go even further in their intimate relationship in Season 3.

Penelope (Nicola) and Colin will take their friendship to the next level on the upcoming season of Bridgerton.
The two will engage in "steamy sex scenes," according to the showrunner.
“They were intimidating to shoot but then brilliant to shoot," Nicola told The Wrap.
“Watching back we’re so proud of them, which is an amazing feeling.”

Season 3 will focus on the blossoming friends-to-lovers relationship between Penelope and Colin (Luke Newton).
Nicola told they outlet that each intimacy scene has a "massive amount of purpose" to them and they always "progress the narrative."
“They’re just a hugely important part of Colin and Pen’s story," she said.
She went on to say that the intimacy scenes helped the new couple connect when words failed.

Part one of the Netflix series will drop the first four episodes on May 16.
The next four will be released on June 13.

'A DEPTH TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP'
Typically, the seasons build up to forming the relationships between the main characters, but because Penelope and Colin have already been friends for years, the showrunners can jump right into the intimacy scenes.
Showrunner Jess Brownell said the characters' history allowed the team to "go further when it came to their sex scenes."
“Because Penelope and Colin have been friends for so long and they have this depth to their relationship, it allowed us to go further with the intimacy scenes this season," she said.
“It’s been building for so long — not just what we’ve seen in Seasons 1 and 2 — but they’ve known each other for years and years.”

The team was also given more of a creative license when it came to Penelope and Colin's relationship evolving.
“They are characters who don’t necessarily play by the rules all the time — certainly not Penelope, who has this whole exceptional career which was so unusual for that time period," Jess told The Wrap.
Penelope has the role of Lady Whistledown, an anonymous writer of a social pamphlet that shares the town gossip.
“That gave us creative license to push them into a more romantic space.”
HOW THEY REALLY FEEL
Nicola said that the scenes were intimidating but also brilliant.
Luke feels similarly and thinks the sex scenes were crucial to the storyline.
“I think because Colin and Pen can struggle to communicate at times because of their history and because they’ve been friends, it sometimes takes them to be in that environment to really open up, emotionally as well as get undressed," he said.
“It helps them to communicate their true feelings.”
