Another Indian student goes missing in US; family alleges Chicago police 'not responding properly'

An Indian student pursuing a master's in Chicago, United States has been missing for a week, since May 2, reported the Indian Consulate in Chicago on Thursday (May 9).

The Indian student has been identified as Rupesh Chandra Chintakindi, a 25-year-old man from Telangana's Warangal. As per media reports, he was pursuing a master's degree from Concordia University in Wisconsin.

"Deeply concerned"

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the Indian consulate in Chicago said it was "deeply concerned learning that Indian student Rupesh Chandra Chintakindi is incommunicado since 2nd May."

He went missing from the 4300 block of N Sheridan Road.

It further said that it was trying to reestablish contact with Rupesh. 

"Consulate is in touch with the police and the Indian diaspora, hoping to locate/reestablish contact with Rupesh."

As per a letter sent by Rupesh's father, Chintikindi Sadanandam, the family last spoke to the Indian student in the afternoon on May 2 over a WhatsApp call. The letter, which is being widely shared on social media, states that since then they have been unable to establish contact with him. 

Rupesh's roommates told his father that he had gone to meet someone from Texas. In a letter to Union Minister of Culture G. Kishan Reddy, Sadanandam said, "We actually don't know who they (the person Rupesh went to meet) are."

While the family has filed a missing complaint in Chicago, as per the father, "the police over there aren't responding properly".

As per news agency ANI, the Chicago police are seeking information about the missing student. In a statement, authorities have urged the public to provide information about Rupesh Chintakindi.

The news of Rupesh being missing comes amid multiple cases of Indian students going missing or being murdered in the US. Previously, in April, an Indian student Mohammed Abdul Arfath who had been missing since March was found dead in Cleaveland, Ohio.

Another student, Uma Satya Sai Gadde, pursuing higher studies in the US, was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
