BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - This week marks the 50th annual Arson Awareness Week, and this year, the focus is on protecting houses of worship.

Nationwide, there was an average of 1,300 fires in places of worship each year from 2020 to 2022.

While the leading cause of those fires is cooking, 15% were the result of intentional action.

The state of Vermont has an arson tip award program started in 1984, aimed at getting public feedback and arresting arsonists.
