A Martin Lewis fan managed to get £1,040 after a flight delay thanks to the BBC Sounds podcast presenter's tip. Leo wrote into the latest episode of the show and explained how a problem with his flight from the UK to Australia arrived 11 hours late.

Mr Lewis explained at the close of his latest BBC Sounds podcast: “So if you have had a flight delay or you have a flight delay in future and it's the airline's fault, so they haven't had their staff rotors, there was a knock-on problem from the prior plane, then you are entitled to this fixed compensation.

"It's as simple as that. Clearly, if there is a strike with the airport staff or there were to be a weather issue that meant they couldn't take off, that wouldn't be the airline's fault and you would not be entitled to the compensation. Just a quick extra note for you about flight delay compensation, because many people think it's a current thing.

"I did mention then that you can go back and here is a message I got from Leo about it. He said, I didn't realise I could go back up to six years to claim flight delay compensation.” Leo said: “I was delayed long call from Manchester to Brisbane, Australia in January 2020, arriving 11 hours late.

"I followed your guidance and claim direct with Singapore Airlines and three weeks later, £1,040 was paid into my bank account for me and my wife. Brilliant result." Mr Lewis said: "So just worth noting, maybe if you had a flight delay in the past and there are some websites where you can check past flight delay times, you might actually be owed some money from the airline. I do think there's always a moral issue over this though.

"If the flight delay wasn't really very much and it was a cheap flight and you were happy to sit in the airport and maybe sit in the bar for a few hours, well, we don't want airlines to go bust because you're claiming just because this rule is this fixed amount of compensation regardless of circumstances.

"But sounds like an 11-hour delay that could have messed your plans, possibly even lost you a hotel room's cost because you didn't stay in it in the night. Well, maybe then, I think it's absolutely fine to make sure that you get the compensation.”
