Jurgen Klopp is set for his penultimate game in charge of Liverpool on Monday when the Reds take on Aston Villa.

Klopp has announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season after nine years at the helm and, although Liverpool are essentially out of the Premier League title race, they will be desperate to end the campaign on a high with wins over Villa and Wolves.

Ahead of their trip to Birmingham, Klopp has addressed rumours surrounding the future of Darwin Nunez and made a promise to Liverpool fans. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest news from around Anfield.

Klopp defends Nunez

Klopp has launched a passionate defence of Nunez and rejected claims he could join Barcelona this summer

"There's no speculation," Klopp hit back when asked about Nunez's future. "That must be an external speculation because I don't know about it. There's no speculation right now. It's just the situation we're in and, yes, Darwin was definitely not happy with missing that chance.

"He's unlucky. He's unlucky in so many situations where he's doing everything right and then the ball still doesn't go in. That's really tough for a young man, it's really tough. He knows about the expectations here, he has big expectations on himself."

Former chief returns

Julian Ward quit as Liverpool's sporting director 12 months ago, but he has now returned to the fold as the club continues to prepare for life after Klopp.

Ward has been appointed technical director of Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group, while Pedro Marques has joined from Benfica to become director of football development. Ward had been lined up for a role at Manchester United, with an offer to become global technical director at INEOS Football Group on the table.

However, he has been convinced to return to Anfield where he will work closely with Michael Edwards, who has also returned to the club, and Richard Hughes.

Klopp makes farewell vow

Klopp has promised to be on his best behaviour against Villa, with the German one yellow card away from a touchline ban that would leave him sat in the crowd for his final game in charge.

When asked about the prospect of getting booked, Klopp said: "I know that already for long, when did I get the second yellow? By the way we could turn it around and say I only got two yellow cards, some of my colleagues got suspended, right? Hmm.

"I got calmer over the years, obviously. I don't need to [be on the touchline] but it would be cool that I could do that. It will not be from my side, I will try absolutely everything to try not get involved in any kind of discussions."
