Incredible Northern Lights display seen across Cornwall - in pictures

The Northern Lights were seen across the UK last night

Northern lights seen over Bude

Cornwall was treated to an incredible display of the Northern Lights last night (May 10). Onlookers were dazzled by the rare sighting caused by unusual weather conditions.

Sightings of the Northern Lights - or Aurora Borealis - is rare in most parts of the UK. But last night, an "extreme" geomagnetic storm heading towards Earth meant visibility was dramatically increased, according to US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The lights we see are the result of particles colliding with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles. The gas atoms then glow the impressive shades of pink, purple, green and blue that we see.

Already picturesque scenes in Cornwall were set against an amazing backdrop of lights. Photos were captured across the region from Bude to St Austell to St Ives and Truro.

Here are some of the incredible snaps that have been sent to CornwallLive.
