The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Sunday following a week of high temperatures in the region.

The warning, for thunderstorms, is in place in the west of England on Sunday (May 12) afternoon. Forecasters have warned the area could see 'heavy showers' and 'thunderstorms' leading to disruption, especially to travel.

It follows a week of hot and dry weather across the UK, with temperatures reaching highs of 23C in Greater Manchester on Saturday.

The warning is in place from 12pm to 10pm on Sunday. On their website, the Met Office warn: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel. Isolated property flooding is possible."

They add people can expect:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, particularly in places such as road and railway underpasses.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
