SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 3 Syracuse opens play in the 2024 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday, May 11 when it hosts No. 14 Stony Brook in second-round action. Opening draw at the SU Soccer Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
Fans can purchase tickets at Cuse.com/tickets. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required) and WJPZ 89.1FM in Syracuse. Live updates will also be available on social media (@CuseWLax).
ORANGE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Syracuse (14-5) is the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange earned a first-round bye for the third time since the tournament field expanded to 29 teams in 2021. Syracuse is making its 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange have an all-time record of 25-20 in tournament play, including a 14-2 mark in the second round.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
Stony Brook (18-2) defeated Niagara, 19-7, in the first round on Friday to advance to the second round. The Seawolves enter Sunday's game on a 13-game winning streak.
Tewaaraton Award finalist Ellie Masera leads the nation in points with 114. Her 75 goals also lead the squad, while Alex Finn has dished out a team-best 53 assists. Aaliyah Jones and Emily Manning have shared time in goal for Stony Brook. They have helped the Seawolves to a 7.73 goals-against average and a .399 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday's game marks the eighth overall meeting and second this season between Syracuse and Stony Brook. The Orange lead the all-time series, 5-2.
The Seawolves visited the JMA Wireless Dome on March 5. The game featured eight ties and needed overtime to be decided. The game was tied at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams had leads in the final quarter of regulation, but neither could pull away. Masera scored with 1:08 remaining to give Stony Brook a 12-11 lead. The Orange won the ensuring draw and Maddy Baxter found the back of the net with 10 seconds on the clock to force overtime. The Seawolves won the draw to start OT and Massera scored her fourth goal of the day to give Stony Brook a 13-12 victory.
