A weather warning for thunderstorms is in place for parts of Northern Ireland after days of warmer weather.

The Met Office yellow warning is in effect from 11am to 7pm today, Sunday, May 12, across western parts of Northern Ireland. The alert has been issued for Co Derry, Co Fermanagh, Co Tyrone, and parts of Co Armagh.

People in areas with a yellow thunderstorm warning should expect some disruption, especially to travel. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and there is a slight chance of power cuts, the Met Office said.

The weather forecaster added: "Slow moving, heavy showers with a risk of isolated thunderstorms may develop over the west of Northern Ireland from late on Sunday morning.

"Many areas will miss the heaviest showers altogether, but a few places could see 30-40 mm in the space of an hour or two, possibly accompanied by some hail. Should they develop, the showers are likely to fade and die out during the evening."

It comes as Northern Ireland experienced its warmest day of the year on Saturday, May 11. Temperatures reached a high of 23.8 C at both Aldergrove in Co Antrim and Magilligan in Co Derry, with similar temperatures recorded at Eglinton Airport.

Temperatures also reached a high of 23 C in Coleraine, and 22 C in Omagh and Enniskillen.

Two other yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place across the UK on Sunday. One covers most areas of the west of the UK, including the majority of Wales, where thunderstorms are expected between midday and 10pm.

The second is for western parts of Scotland between 2pm on Sunday to 4am on Monday. Simon Partridge, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said this warning is slightly different as more significant rainfall is expected.
