The Northern Lights made a rare appearance across Scotland this weekend.

And there was a strong hint they might just be switching back on for Aberdeen too as the Red Army belted out their anthem after a dazzling display in the capital. It’s now seven league games unbeaten for Peter Leven’s side who go seventh after this romp in Leith. And the brightest moment of the afternoon arrived with the last kick of the ball as 16-year-old debutant Fletcher Boyd climbed off the bench to knock home the fourth - and become the Dons’ youngest ever scorer.

But for Nick Montgomery it’s beginning to look increasingly likely that the lights on his Hibs reign could soon be put out after an awful day at the office for the under-fire boss. Where Aberdeen’s big players are coming to the fore, Hibs’ are in hiding at a time when their manager needs them most. The review of the football structure at Easter Road came with a warning to the boss that results must improve. Well it’s now two defeats from three since that announcement followed the failure to reach the top six. And the boos that rained down on the boss and his players at full-time told their own story.

Not that Aberdeen are caring. A stunning Leighton Clarkson strike lit up a game being played like a dead rubber before Dante Polvara doubled the Dons’ advantage before half-time. Bojan Miovski’s 26th goal of the season put the game to bed after 51 minutes before Boyd’s dream moment which came two days after he helped the Dons win the U-18 youth league. And Leven said: “He has been brilliant this season for the U18’s. He has contributed to more than 30 goals and has just turned 16.

“Just to get his debut is amazing but to score wow, he will never forget that. It 100 percent shows if you are good enough you are old enough. There’s a pathway at this club as the academy has done amazing this year.

"I told him yesterday he would be in the squad. We obviously left him after Friday’s result and let him celebrate with his team-mates a little bit. Then we told him he was in the squad. Then I pulled him before we left that he is on the bench. The fans were unbelievable. I know we are bottom six but for them to turn up like that and sing the boy’s name ‘Fletcher Boyd, he’s one of our own’ is a fairytale for him.”

Clarkson lit the fuse with a beautifully struck 25 yard effort and Leven added: “I said to him before the game ‘you need to shoot more and get more goals on your tally’. He’s got a great right foot. What a player he is. I took the shackles off him in possession and said ‘go and enjoy it, go and excite me’ but out of possession he works hard as well. He was fantastic. He’s a top player, so bright. He’s somebody Fletcher could learn off as well.

“They’re asking for a day off tomorrow but I said ‘no chance’. We’ve got two games to try and win. That was the target I put to them and they bought into it.”
