A driving expert has shared a simple way to save money on petrol and diesel. The change in travel habits can help engines to run at "peak efficiency," YouTube channel World Driving explained.

They said that changing schedules to combine separate trips into longer ones will reduce the strain on the engine and use up less fuel which in turn saves cash. In a video, they said: "Instead of taking lots of short trips, try to combine them into one longer trip if you can.

“A warmed-up engine operates at its peak efficiency whereas frequent cold starts can lead to higher fuel consumption even if the overall distance travelled is the same."

Specialists at XCite Car Leasing previously warned road users of the benefits adopting the technique could hold, The Express reports. They said: "A hot engine is a more efficient one, because your battery works better in warmer conditions.

"One way that you can improve your overall fuel economy is by combining several smaller trips into one longer journey." ATS Euromaster added: "A car engine works most efficiently once it’s warmed up. When you do short trips, the engine doesn’t have a chance to reach its ideal operating temperature and therefore consumes more fuel.

"Where possible, planning ahead could save you lots of time in traffic which, in turn, will also save you fuel. Avoid travelling during rush hour where you can and, if this isn’t possible, look for alternate routes that avoid major congestion."

It comes as analysis from RAC Fuel Watch, the leading petrol and diesel price comparison site in the UK, has revealed dramatic rises in the price of fuel so far in 2024.
