Dismembered body parts dumped in a suitcase have been found in Paris weeks before the Olympics are due to be held there.

A man has now handed himself in to a police station following the grim discovering under a bridge on the River Seine - which is a stone's throw from the Gare du Lyon. Last Saturday fire crews were called to put out a rubbish fire at the Austerlitz Bridge in the capital and found the human body parts.

A 34-year-old man is to be questioned after coming forwards to a police station on Sunday morning, according to the Paris public prosecutor's office. He has been remanded in custody, reports the Mirror.

An official statement from the office said: “He has been remanded into custody for murder. Numerous investigations are under way and the person concerned has not yet been interviewed.”

French radio station Europe1 reports the man told police he committed the crime, with the victim reportedly a disabled man he was carer to before they got into a dispute. The body was found at the foot of the bridge at around 10pm on Saturday.

A source close to the investigation told Le Parisien the body of “an adult male” was missing “upper and lower limbs”. They said: “The body was complete but in several pieces.” The area, just around the corner of the river from Ile-de-la-Cité where Notre Dame stands, is known to be frequented by homeless people.

Last year, dismembered body parts of a woman were discovered in Buttes-Chaumont, a park in the north east of Paris. The 46-year-old victim had been a mum-of-three reported missing by her husband, who was subsequently charged with her murder.
