Everything seems to be going as usual in the NWSL until injuries take their toll. The latest blow falls on San Diego Waves’ standout, Jaedyn Shaw, whose abrupt departure during today’s match against Gotham FC has sparked concerns. The tension intensifies not just for the attacker’s domestic side but also for Emma Hayes, as Shaw’s injury may cast doubt over her participation for the USWNT in the impending Paris Olympics. 

Unfortunately, the injury came just moments before the final whistle was about to be blown by the referee. During the stoppage time, Waves were awarded a corner in an attempt to find a winning goal after their defender Hanna Lundkvist equalized Gotham FC’s first-half strike from Ella Stevens. However, Shaw seemed to become entangled between two opposing players, resulting in a leg injury.

Despite her efforts to continue playing, the 19-year-old luminary had to leave the field limping, with Elyse Bennett substituting for her. During the post-match presser, Wave boss Casey Stoney gave an update on the forward’s injury. Per Pro Soccer Wire, she said, “I’ve not had any update from the medical team. I’m sure she’s being examined [at the moment]. She came down on her ankle, it looked like. But no update on her as of yet. Hopefully she’s OK. She’s a big, important player for us.”

If Shaw were to be sidelined for an extended period, it would be a significant setback for both her club and national team. She would be joining her teammate Alex Morgan in the recuperation room, who also remains sidelined. In fact, Shaw’s injury is one of the worries for Emma Hayes and Co., as another USWNT player recently suffered an injury blow today!

Besides Jaedyn Shaw, Alyssa Naeher remains a concern for Emma Hayes and USWNT!

During the Chicago Red Stars’ 3-1 victory over the Utah Royals, Alyssa Naeher picked up an injury after sprinting back to defend during the 60th minute. Despite trying to continue, the 36-year-old was noticeably struggling and had to be substituted for Mackenzie Wood. Following the match, head coach Lorne Donaldson remarked, “I’m leaving it to the pros, I don’t know what’s going on yet.” 

Perhaps further tests by the medical staff will provide clarity on Naeher’s return timeline. Alongside Jaedyn Shaw, Alyssa Naeher, and Alex Morgan, Naomi Girma and Abby Dahlkemper also remain sidelined. Notably, prior to the summer games, Emma Hayes’ team is scheduled to play two friendly matches against South Korea on June 1 and June 4. Certainly, let’s hope everyone recovers quickly in time.
