The elation didn’t last long for some Wrexham AFC players. Soon after their historic promotion to League One, the Red Dragons started planning for the next season. The alarm bells rang when manager Phil Parkinson said, “The massive challenge for us is can we build this squad strongly to challenge in League One.” Part of the process saw not one or two, but 8 players released from the club! Now, the club’s most expensive player ever, Ollie Palmer spoke on the incident that is considered ‘normal‘ in soccer.

On the Elvis Duran podcast, Palmer revealed why the incident was hard for the players. He explained “You do get attached to the clubs that you play, for the fans. You do get attached to your teammates and it’s hard.” The Englishman added that he would have been pissed if he faced such a situation since the players just helped Wrexham gain promotion. So, how do you deal with such situations?

According to Palmer, the key is not to get too attached. He explained, “You can’t be too sentimental. You always need to freshen up the team and it (getting released) happens to absolutely everybody and my time will come.” Palmer won’t be leaving the club anytime soon as the Englishman is a key player for the Red Dragons. In the concluded campaign, the striker played 39 matches and scored 7 goals. The 32-year-old is the partner in crime of Paul Mullin, but that could change next season.

With a transfer fee of $440k, Ollie Palmer is the most expensive buy for the Red Dragons. However, that could be about to change as the club has set its sights on Macauley Langstaff. The Notts county star had an immense season with 28 goals in League Two and walked away with the Golden Boot. By comparison, Wrexham’s star forward Paul Mullin scored 24 times last season. The story is that the Welsh side wants Langstaff to partner with Mullin next season. A significant financial outlay would needed and the club has alternative options as well.

Jamie Vardy was sensational in the Skybet Championship and netted 18 goals. His efforts helped Leicester City gain promotion to the Premier League. But at 37, Vardy is not the future for the Foxes. With his contract,  expiring this summer, a host of clubs in interested in the veteran. Wrexham is one of those and Vardy’s age is not a factor according to the club chief.
