Real Madrid open contract talks with veteran over extending 17-year stay

With the season almost over, and only the Champions League final to look forward to, Real Madrid have started their squad planning for the 2024-25 campaign. Amid reports that Luka Modric’s future is being discussed, Los Blancos officials are also making moves to tie down another veteran player, that being Lucas Vazquez.

Lucas has had a very impressive season, filling in adequately for Dani Carvajal on numerous occasions. His current deal expires in six weeks’ time, but as per Marca, talks are already underway to tie him down to another 12-month contract.

The idea is for Lucas to continue as Carvajal’s understudy for next season, with no plans for Real Madrid to sign a new right-back in the upcoming summer transfer window. Given his presence in the dressing room as a leader, it makes complete sense for a one-year contract extension to be agreed.

Lucas only wants to stay at Real Madrid, which means that an agreement should not take long. His time at the club will go into an 18th year, which would make him the longest-serving player in Carlo Ancelotti’s first team squad – replacing the outgoing Nacho Fernandez.
