Norwich City have sacked David Wagner following their humiliating play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds United. The German has left Carrow Road following their 4-0 humbling at Elland Road.

Wagner struggled to win over the Canaries fan-base since replacing Dean Smith as head coach in January 2023. There was talk of him being axed earlier this season following a poor run of form but he arrested their slide and led Norwich to a sixth-placed finish.

After a drab stalemate in the first leg of their play-off semi-final with United last Sunday, Norwich were blown away at Elland Road last night. The Whites romped to a 4-0 success to book a trip to Wembley later this month. As well as Wagner, assistant head coach Christoph Bühler has also departed.

Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “David has operated with class and dignity throughout his period as Norwich City head coach, but we now feel that the time is right for us to move in a different direction.

“We remain committed to progressing our football club, in both the short and long-term, working through a diligent and thorough strategy.

“The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the view of making an appointment in the near future.”

Wagner oversaw just 31 wins, 17 draws and 27 defeats. His win ratio reads 41 per cent. The Sun claim Norwich will turn their attentions to hiring a more progressive coach, having spoken to Arsenal assistant Carlos Cuesta earlier in the season. It is also thought Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has been sounded out for the job.
