The Mets entered the weekend with a 20-23 record and are fourth in the NL East. Sadly, they lost two of three games to the Philadelphia Phillies. It put them at a 5-9 mark through their first 14 games of May. Now, they hope to gain some momentum on this road trip as they are in South Florida.

The Marlins entered the weekend with a 13-32 record. Yet, they just won two of three games against the Detroit Tigers, putting them at 5-9 through their first 14 games of May. Ultimately, they hope to slowly build some momentum.

The Mets went 9-4 against the Marlins last season. Furthermore, they went 5-2 over seven games at LoanDepot Park. The under hit in 9 of 13 games last season. Also, the Marlins did not win by more than one run at home. It will be an intriguing pitching matchup.

Luis Severino pitches for the Mets. He is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Recently, he tossed five innings while allowing two earned runs on four hits in a no-decision against the Atlanta Braves. Severino threw six shutout innings while allowing one hit and striking out eight in his only appearance against the Marlins.

Braxton Garrett starts for the Marlins. He is 0-0 with an 8.44 ERA after his first start of the season. Ultimately, he tossed 5 1/3 innings while allowing five earned runs on five hits while striking out eight in his season debut against the Philadelphia Phillies. Garrett is 0-2 with a 3.90 ERA over seven games against the Mets.

Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mets are struggling at the plate. So far, they are 2oth in batting average, 17th in on-base percentage, and 19th in runs. New York is also 25th in home runs and 29th in slugging percentage. Therefore, they need their hitters to start producing.

Pete Alonso is struggling with consistency at the plate. Significantly, he is batting .226 with nine home runs, 23 RBIs, and 27 runs. But Alonso is also 6 for 15 against Garrett, with two home runs and four RBIs against the Miami pitcher. Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor looks like a shell of his former self. Lindor is batting .194 with seven home runs, 21 RBIs, and 25 runs. Yet, he is also 5 for 14 with three home runs and six RBIs against Garrett.

JD Martinez is batting .292 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and five runs through 19 games with the Mets. Ultimately, he is 0 for 3 against Garrett. Starling Marte is batting .259 with four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 21 runs. Amazingly, he is 3 for 5 with one RBI against Garrett.

The Mets' pitching is inconsistent, and their team ERA is 13th overall. However, the Mets' bullpen is the third-best in baseball, and its ability to close games and hold tight scores is notable.

The Mets will cover the spread if their best hitters can produce and avoid leaving runners stranded on the basepaths. Then, they need a good outing from Severino.

Why The Marlins Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Marlins are having a bad season at the plate. Currently, they are 23rd in batting average and 29th in on-base percentage. The Marlins are also 27th in runs, 25th in home runs, and 29th in slugging percentage. Thus, their hitters are making opposing pitchers look amazing and must adjust.

Jazz Chisholm is batting .252 with five home runs, 21 RBIs, and 19 runs. Also, he is hitting just .231 with four home runs, 11 RBIs, and 19 runs against the Mets in his career. Bryan De La Cruz is batting .256 with nine home runs, 24 RBIs, and 25 runs this season. Additionally, he is hitting .278 with four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 13 runs in his career against the Mets.

Josh Bell is batting .212 with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and 19 runs. Moreover, he is hitting just .230 with eight home runs, 22 RBIs, and 19 runs through 53 games against New Tork. Jake Burger is batting only .176 with three home runs, 15 RBIs, and nine runs. Likewise, he is hitting .212 with four RBIs and three runs over nine games against the Mets. But he is 2 for 3 with a home run against Severino.

The Marlins are awful on the mound. So far, they are 29th in team ERA. The Marlins also have fielded a very bad bullpen, ranking 26th in team ERA.

The Marlins will cover the spread if they can get a monster day from one of their hitters. Then, they need Garrett to bounce back.

Final Mets-Marlins Prediction & Pick

These teams engaged in numerous low-scoring games last season. Now, they seem to have gotten worse on offense. Both teams struggle to consistently drive runners across the plate. Combine that with the fact that the Mets will send out a good pitcher, and the Marlins will trot out a reliable arm, and you have a recipe for another low-scoring game. Go with the under in this one, as both teams struggle to place the baseball and do not do much offensively.
