PLAYSTATION is aware of how excellent its legacy library of games is, which is why backwards compatibility is at the core of its consoles.

The original PlayStation 3 can play all PS1 and PS2 games, but as the library has grown, it has become more difficult.

More PS2 games could be coming to PS5 in the future

To balance the fact that the PS5 can only read PS5 or PS4 discs, a number of older games are available to play digitally.

Sony showcases this library best with its PS Plus Premium subscription which includes a classics catalogue with many PS1 and PSP games, but only a dozen PS2 titles.

PS3 games are also part of PS Plus Premium, but there is no emulator for the console, meaning that they all have to be streamed from the cloud.

While some PS2 games are available to download via PS Plus Premium, these are actually ports of the classic titles released for the PS4 and available via backwards compatibility on PS5.

However, this might be changing soon, as PlayStation fans have spotted a revealing detail about an upcoming PS2 addition.

As reported by Gematsu, the upcoming store listing for Star Wars: The Clone Wars shows both a PS5 and PS4 version.

This means it would be the first PS2 game to be ported to PS5 specifically, and the first new PS2 game to be added digitally since 2019.

It will also reportedly include new features such as the ability to rewind and quick save.

This is huge for PS5 players, as it means that more classic PS2 games could be coming to their consoles in the future.

There are a number of popular PS2-only games, such as Deus Ex, Dragon Quest 8, God Hand and Tales of Abyss, that now have a chance of coming digitally to PS5.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the only such game currently known, but fans are keeping their hopes up for the future.
