Brazil icon Rivaldo has defended Manchester United midfielder Casemiro - and claimed that he could depart for Saudi Arabia this summer.

United have endured a difficult campaign and are all but out of the European picture, despite the three-point gap, due to their significantly inferior goal difference compared to Chelsea and Newcastle.

The 32-year-old has faced criticism following his recent performances during a difficult run for Erik ten Hag's side. The Dutchman has faced scrutiny over his position in the Old Trafford hot seat, as the MEN reported in February with Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi attracting attention.

Rivaldo has launched a staunch defence of his Brazilian compatriot, claiming that the former Real Madrid midfielder could join the Saudi Arabian exodus, this summer.

"Manchester United are not the club they once were," he said speaking to Betfair. "The club is going through difficulties, and it is unfair that Casemiro is criticised for that. It is up to the club to put together a strong squad and then it depends on all the players performing so that they can compete for titles.

"I've heard rumours that he could go to Saudi Arabia, but if he wants to play in a World Cup, he must go back to Spain, or move to Italy, and compete at the highest level because he still has the skills necessary for that."

Casemiro's former Madrid teammate, Raphael Varane, will definitely leave Manchester United this summer after his contract is set to expire at the end of June. The midfielder has two years remaining on his current deal in the North West with an option of a further year but the MEN understands the club are prepared to sell players amid the threat of outgoings this summer.
