Steve Carell HBO comedy from Bill Lawrence ordered to series

Steve Carell is heading to HBO

The Oscar- and Emmy-nominated star of “The Office” has signed on to star in a new comedy series from creators Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”) and Matt Tarses (“Scrubs”), Max announced Monday.

The untitled half-hour series, which received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order, will be set on a college campus and tell the story of an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter.

Lawrence, an Emmy winner, and Tarses, an Emmy nominee, will write the first episode and executive produce, along with Carell, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer

“The combination of Steve Carell and Bill Lawrence promises to be full of great laughs, warmth, and charm. We’re thrilled to be the home for this long overdue collaboration,” HBO & Max comedy EVP Amy Gravitt said in a statement.

“HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV. Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me,” Lawrence said in a statement. “Nothing can go wrong now.”

The series is part of Lawrence’s fruitful deal with Warner Bros. Television. In recent years, the “Scrubs” veteran has co-created “Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking,” and the upcoming “Bad Monkey” for Warner Bros. and Apple TV+. Also on Monday, Apple TV+ announced that “Bad Monkey,” a crime dramedy starring Vince Vaughn, will premiere on Aug. 14.

Tarses has written for “Sports Night,” “Scrubs,” “The Goldbergs,” and many other sitcoms over the course of his 25+ year career.

Carell will next be heard reprising his role as Gru in “Despicable Me 4” and will be seen in Netflix’s upcoming comedy series “The Four Seasons” opposite Tina Fey

The new father-daughter series will air on HBO and stream on Max.
