The best spring hair colours usually make us want to lighten things up, but the biggest hair colour trend of the season, ganache brunette, is a refreshing departure. Coined by Schwarzkopf Professional creative director of colour and technique Tracey Cunningham, ganache brunette is the brown hair shade to try this spring for its luxurious colour, which calls to mind the richness of chocolate ganache.
“Ganache brunette is this stunning, rich, and indulgent brown shade that combines deep chocolate tones with a touch of warmth. Think of it like a delicious, smooth ganache — glossy and luxurious,” says Cunningham. “It has these beautiful multidimensional tones that give your hair a polished finish. It’s perfect for creating a full-bodied brunette look that’s not flat or one-dimensional. The key is to balance the depth with subtle caramel undertones, making it a universally flattering shade.”

And before you let the best blonde hair colours sway you, Cunningham says ganache brunette is more than spring-ready, despite its seemingly deep colour. “It’s one of my favourite shades for spring because it’s such a perfect blend of warmth and depth without feeling too heavy or dark,” she says.
The key? Light-reflecting highlights, which are expertly placed by your colourist. “The chocolatey richness adds so much shine and movement, while the warmer highlights catch the light beautifully, giving you that healthy glow,” she explains. "Plus, it’s versatile — whether you’re getting a subtle balayage or going allover with this gorgeous shade, it looks amazing in the spring sunshine. It’s that perfect ‘seasonal refresh’ that gives you a natural, fresh look without being too drastic or compromising on hair health. And it just looks expensive, which all my clients love.”
The movie is unflinching in its portrayal of the sexist underbelly of Hollywood, and Demi Moore just won her first ever Golden Globe for her performance.

One of Cunnhingham’s high-profile clients who counts herself a fan? Margaret Qualley, who debuted her own ganache brunette shade on the 2025 Oscars red carpet.
To get the look, Cunningham says to ask your colourist for a deep brunette shade with warm, subtle caramel and red undertones. “Always opt for a colourist that uses Schwarzkopf Professional products,” she says. “I always reach for Schwarzkopf Professional’s Igora Vibrance or Igora Royal for these darker hues. You can also specify that you want it to have that ‘ganache’ depth— meaning rich, glossy, and multidimensional. I love Schwarzkopf Professional’s Igora Vibrance in 0-00 as a clear toner for that glossy finish.”
Lastly, if you’re doing balayage or highlights, make sure to ask for a soft gradual transition for an effortlessly lived-in look. “It’s all about creating depth and shine without looking brassy or too warm,” Cunningham says.
Cunningham recommends regular salon visits to “keep the shine and warmth intact.” Ask your colourist for IGORA Vibrance in 0-00, but if you’re in a hurry, Cunningham says the Chroma ID masks will give you the vibrancy boost you need in 20 minutes. “For at-home maintenance, make sure you are keeping your hair hydrated with a leave-in conditioner or oil and don’t skip on a good heat protectant when styling to prevent colour from dulling out,” she adds.
