Hull City Council has today (Friday, April 25) released a statement regarding Queen Victoria Square fountains.

The fountain was installed in Hull city centre ahead of the UK City of Culture in 2017 and quickly became a popular attraction for families during the summer months.

In January, the Leader of Hull City Council, Mike Ross, was challenged during a full council meeting on when the fountains would be operational again after not being operational in 2024. Labour Councillor Tracy Dearing, who represents the Newington and Gipsyville ward, asked Cllr Ross if he could "give a commitment that the fountains in Queen Victoria Square will be working and open by spring this year."

Cllr Ross told Cllr Dearing, and the chamber, that "the Council is working through solutions to reopen the fountains in anticipation of the summer period."

In a statement today, Gillian Osgerby, interim assistant director for major projects and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “Following the completion of on-going maintenance and repair works to the fountains, further faults were discovered with the internal mechanisms, which are a key part of their operation and can affect water quality.

“Additional repairs have now been undertaken, but further testing is required to ensure the fountains are safe.

“Despite our best efforts to reopen the fountains, we will not do so until the issues have been fully resolved, and the water quality is satisfactory. While we understand this is disappointing, public safety is our top priority.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate the community’s patience as we work diligently with our engineers to resolve this issue.”
