Super Eagles transfer: Two English clubs eye ex-Arsenal defender

Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi is attracting transfer interest from two English clubs as he prepares to leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ajayi, who once featured for Arsenal’s youth teams, is out of contract this summer, and West Brom have reportedly decided not to offer him a new deal as they look to reshape their squad ahead of next season.

According to information cited by Africafoot, Championship outfit Hull City and League One side Reading have both expressed interest in signing the experienced Nigerian defender once he becomes a free agent.

Semi Ajayi’s Impact at West Brom

The 31-year-old has been a key figure at the Hawthorns since joining West Brom in 2019 from Rotherham United, playing a vital role in their promotion to the Premier League and subsequent campaigns in the Championship.

Ajayi has also made 41 appearances for the Super Eagles, including being part of the squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Soccernet’s Verdict: Should Semi Ajayi Consider Top-Flight Football?

As mentioned earlier, the Nigerian defender played a key role in the Super Eagles’ defence during the 2023 AFCON campaign, which should position him as a potential target for top-flight clubs.

Given the quality and experience Ajayi possesses, he shouldn’t be the type of player left to battle in the lower tiers of English football. If a move to a Premier League club doesn’t materialise, he should explore opportunities in other top divisions abroad.
