Hull KR produced a stunning fightback to retain top spot in Super League, coming from behind to beat Leeds Rhinos 20-14. Both teams were given controversial red cards in the second half but it was the Robins who prevailed, coming from 14-8 down to win after late tries from James Batchelor and Mikey Lewis.
This felt like a huge test for the Robins and it proved to be just that. But as keeps proving to be the case, they found a way. They were up against it when Sauaso Sue was controversially red-carded but they got better from that point and got over the line. Don't say it too early, but that's the sign of a champion team.
Peters had a major selection call to make before the game with both his first-choice wingers unavailable and he ultimately decided to go for something of a makeshift three-quarter line. Peta Hiku went to wing and was partnered by Batchelor. Jack Broadbent was the other winger, accompanied by Oliver Gildart.
The start of the game saw Rovers dominate territory. Jack Sinfield was sin-binned early for a high tackle on Arthur Mourgue and their ill-discipline saw the Robins spend most of the opening stages in Leeds' half.
When Jake Connor was shown a green card after play was stopped to allow his dislocated finger to be put back in place, Leeds were down to eleven and Rovers capitalised. Hiku scythed through with a trademark run, and while the supporting Mikey Lewis was brought down, Rovers shifted the ball to the other edge and Broadbent was on hand to score against his former club.
To make matters worse for Leeds, former Robin Ryan Hall was forced off through with an ankle injury suffered trying to track down Lewis. It made for a chaotic start to the game for the Rhinos.
But credit to the hosts, who showed resilience and eventually got their rewards. Kelepi Tanginoa was penalised on the last tackle for holding down and with rare territory, Leeds scored. Jake Connor was the creator, threading through a delightful grubber that Ash Handley got to first after Rovers jammed in.
Miller missed the conversion but kicked Leeds ahead with a penalty goal soon after when Connor was caught high by Jez Litten. However, Rovers hit back four minutes before half-time with a penalty goal of their own, Mourue slotting the kick after James Bentley went high on Lewis.
Lewis went for a drop goal just before the break but missed, leaving the scores level at half-time in what had been a high-quality contest.
The second half was attritional again before Leeds opened it up with a fantastic try. Connor dunked a pass to Handley and after it created space, the centre showed great composure to find Riley Lumb. He drew the fullback, gave it back to Handley, who in turn gave the ball back to his winger to beat another defender and score in the corner. Miller's conversion opened up a 12-6 lead.
Rovers' response was impressive though as they got back into the grind. Leeds were being forced to come out of their own half and looked to be tiring.
But then, a key moment. Sam Lisone had come on and made an impact for the hosts and after another rampant run, he was caught in the head by Sue. But to the shock of many, he was red carded, not sin binned, despite the fact Lisone was falling to the ground, which usually counts as mitigation. Not this time.
To make matters worse, Leeds were able to kick for two and that extended their lead to eight points with 20 minutes to go.
To their credit though, the league leaders responded excellently again and scored ten minutes later. Lewis hadn't been at his best in the game but created this try, a short pass putting Jai Whitbread through two men, and the ball was moved to Broadbent to score in the corner. Mourgue couldn't convert, but it was a one-score game again.
Then, the next flash point. A red card for Leeds with Handley given his marching orders for a late and high shot on Mouruge. But again, based on what we have seen this season, it didn't appear to be an offence worthy of a red card.
That spurred Rovers into life and they spectacularly won the game. Down Handley's vacant side, space was created and Batchelor 'dived' in like the makeshift winger he was! Mourgue pulled his conversion wide and the game was level.
But Rovers won in the next set. A brilliant cut-out ball sent Broadbent away and in support was Lewis, who raced away to score under the sticks to win the match, with Rovers clinging on in the closing minutes to secure two valuable points in a controversial game.
