Boro Women U23s suffered a narrow defeat to York City LFC in the County Cup final this afternoon.

The sun was shining as Boro Women's U23s looked to cap off their season with another trophy after already clinching the league title earlier this year.

Two York injuries halted the game early on, preventing any passages of play and making it a stop-start affair.

The games' opening chance went the way of York as Boro looked to get in behind through Amber Rodgers, York won the ball and broke quickly but Merrin Boyle produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.

Jane Harland had Boro's first look on goal as she shot from range, looking for the bottom corner but the 'keeper was equal to it, tipping the ball wide.

Boro had a chance cleared off the line, Annabelle Thomas' skill won Boro a corner that was whipped into the far post and looked to be going all the way in but a collective effort from York saw the ball  cleared off the line.

Thomas had another moment of good skill as she drove at goal from midfield and opened up a shot that was saved well by the York 'keeper.

On the half-hour mark Ella Hopson fired a shot off the bar from Rosa Bainbridge's long throw before Annie Mitchell hit the rebound just over.

Minutes after Annabelle Thomas was denied a brilliant goal as she unleashed a shot from 30 yards at goal, but it smashed off the crossbar.

Having had little to do Merrin Bolye was ready and alert when a shot from range came her way, tipping it wide of the post.

On the stroke of half-time York took the lead from a corner very much against the run of play, heading over the top of Merrin Boyle who rushed out to claim the ball.

After being on top in the first half Boro looked to continue that in the second, and early on Thomas had a shot go just wide as she was set up from close range by Rodgers.

Matt Gatiss then made two changes in quick succession with Ellie Callander and Lily Readman coming on for Annie Mitchell and Ella Hopson.

Boro got into their groove as they played through the thirds and beat Yorks press ending in Rosa Bainbridge shooting from range and forcing a great save.

Minutes later, Fran Ward was forced off with an injury, replaced by Annie Mitchell.

Late on Merrin Boyle produced another great save from an effort form miles out that could have caught her out.

With six minutes added Boro battled but despite a valiant performance suffered a narrow defeat in the County Cup final.
