A woman was reportedly hit in the face with a hammer as children cried in terror when a fight broke out on a Merseyside beach. Merseyside Police rushed to the scene on West Kirby beach at around 6.50pm yesterday (May 11) where they found a woman with head injuries, with one resident telling the ECHO how she was hit in the face after a fight broke out.

The witness, who lives near to the beach, said two men began fighting before a woman became involved. She then claimed a second woman picked up a hammer and hit her in the head in the middle of the fight.

Police confirmed earlier today two people had been arrested at the scene; a 37-year-old man from Woodchurch was arrested on suspicion of affray and a a 33-year-old woman from Moreton was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

The woman in her 20s who suffered the head wound was taken to hospital but later discharged. The resident, who asked not to be named, explained how she watched the entire incident unfold.

She said: "There was a muscly man and a big man and I saw them fighting each other. I didn't think much of it but then a woman got involved and started attacking the muscly man.

"Another woman who was there then picked up a hammer used to knock the sun umbrella into the ground and hit the other woman in the head. She had blood dripping down her face."

She continued: "Their children were all there crying. They must be traumatised by it all. I've never seen anything like that before, it was terrible."

Business owners nearby told the ECHO how they saw police cars and ambulances arrive at the scene after the incident, with Merseyside Police now appealing for information.

Detective Inspector Sarah Wilkinson said: “We understand the distress that this incident will have caused to those enjoying West Kirby on a sunny evening, including families and young children.

"Initially this appears to have been an incident involving people known to each other and as such there was no wider threat to the public.

“I would ask that anyone who saw the incident, or captured anything on mobile phones or other devices to come forward.

"We will be in the area to gather information and offer reassurance as we look into exactly what happened.”
