A Ryanair aircraft was forced to be grounded following a "bomb threat" mid-flight, with all passengers instructed to stay on board as the investigation proceedings unfold.

Currently stationed at Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) in Belgium, the flight, having originated from Porto, Portugal, sits idle.

The airport's officials issued an announcement confirming that a "bomb threat was triggered" this morning, leading to emergency services establishing a safety cordon surrounding the plane.

Authorities had directed the 166 passengers to remain inside whilst bringing all other airport activity to a halt, closing both runways and incoming and outgoing flights.

The statement issued by the airport disclosed: "This Tuesday morning, shortly before 11am, a bomb threat was triggered on board a plane that landed at Charleroi airport.

"A security perimeter was set up around the aircraft, necessitating the closure of the runway and therefore the interruption of operations."

Reiterating the ongoing situation, the release included: "The relevant authorities have taken over. We will keep you informed of further developments.", reports the Mirror.

The airport's spokesperson Nathalie Pierard informed the Brussels Times relating to passenger evacuation that they would be disembarked once police clearance is granted. They have since been allowed off the plane.

She added: "The plane has been moved to a separate area of the airport."

Continuing details from the spokesperson noted: "The runway and the main road behind it are closed, and a security perimeter of 500 metres has been set up.

"The police are on the scene and the 166 passengers will be evacuated from the plane once approved by the police.

"It is currently unclear how long the disruption will last. Lunchtime is an off-peak moment for flights, so not too many passengers should be affected."

Ryanair issued a statement, saying: "Ryanair was informed of a security threat on flight FR6313 from Faro to Brussels Charleroi today, 13th May.

"The aircraft landed normally at Charleroi as planned. Passengers have been disembarked and the aircraft is being prepared for return to service. We sincerely apologise to any passengers affected.”
