Van driver dies in Sutton Coldfield crash after failing to stop for police

A van driver aged 35 has died following a crash in Lindridge Road near the junction with Springfield Road in Sutton Coldfield after being pursued by police

A van driver has died in Sutton Coldfield after ‘failing to stop’ for police officers and then being involved in a crash.

The incident took place in Lindridge Road, close to the junction with Springfield Road, near Falcon Lodge, on Thursday (May 22).


The 35-year-old van driver is understood to have ‘failed to stop for officers moments before the crash’ shortly before midnight.

He was given CPR by officers at the scene before ambulance workers arrived. But the man died shortly afterwards.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Lindridge Road and Springfield Road in Sutton Coldfield at 11.41pm on Thursday (May 22).

"We sent an ambulance, two paramedic officers and a critical care paramedic to the scene where, on arrival, crews found one car had come off the road and overturned.

"The driver, a man, was in a critical condition and ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, he could not be saved and was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"A second man, a police officer not involved in the collision, was assessed by medics but did not require hospital treatment and so was discharged at the scene.


Lindridge Road was closed off to traffic as a result of the crash to allow investigations to be carried out.

West Midlands Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as a result of their contact with the deceased.

The force is now appealing for any witnesses to the incident, particularly those with dashcam footage to come forward.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “A man has died following a collision in Sutton Coldfield late last night.

“The 35-year-old man was the driver of a van which failed to stop for officers moments before crashing in Lindridge Road near to the junction of Springfield Road, just before midnight last night.


“Despite the best efforts of the officers - who began CPR before ambulance colleagues arrived - the man sadly died a short time later.

“The road was closed while emergency services and investigators established the circumstances of the collision.

“The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as is normal procedure.
