Aston Villa player of the season Youri Tielemans is likely to be handed an improved contract to reflect his growing importance at the club.

That is according to the Daily Telegraph, who also claim Tyrone Mings is expected to hold talks with Villa over an extension to his current deal that has just a year to run.

Tielemans has become the ticking heart of Unai Emery’s Villa team, making 52 appearances in all competitions this season, including 35 in the Premier League until being struck down by a calf injury before the trip to Bournemouth earlier this month. He also started all 12 of their Champions League matches.

It wasn’t always that way. The FA Cup winner with Leicester City struggled to pin down a place after his free-transfer move to Villa from the King Power Stadium in the summer of 2023.

But not any more. Villa boss Emery said of the Belgium international recently: “Last year was difficult for him because he needed time to adapt. He had good players in front of him, for example Douglas Luiz.

“But he always showed us his mentality, his skills. His versatility is also very important, playing as a number six, eight or a 10. Sometimes last year he even played on the left.

“This year he's been really consistent. I think he's one of our leaders on the field. Overall he's an important player for us, very important.”

Mings, a former Villa captain, has made 14 top-flight appearances this term after recovering from the devastating knee ligament injury that struck him down on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign.

The now 32-year-old has had to share central defensive duties this term with the likes of Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and loan recruit Axel Desasi, but remains a key figure at the club.

Emery, who is also reported to be in advanced talks with France international Boubacar Kamara over a new contract, has worked wonders during a little over two-and-a-half years as Villa boss.

But he is far from done yet. The Telegraph report adds: “Emery is determined to continue Villa’s upward trajectory. He has performed another outstanding job this season to reach the Champions League quarter-finals and an FA Cup semi-final.”

Villa also go to Manchester United on Sunday looking for a final-day win hoping to secure a top-five finish and Champions League football for a second successive season.

The Telegraph report that Villa are likely to have to sell at least one “big-name” player this summer to keep within Premier League spending rules, with World Cup-winner Emi Martinez looking likely to depart amid widespread interest in the goalkeeper.

Jacob Ramsey, a product of the Villa academy, could be another casualty as his sale would represent pure profit for the club, even if a deal would be hugely unpopular with fans.

But it is claimed Emery will not countenance the sale of Morgan Rogers at any price, amid reported interest from Liverpool. The recently capped England international was signed for a fee of around £15m from Middlesbrough last year, but is now reported to be worth upwards of £100m and, according to the Telegraph, “ is perhaps the best example of how players improve under Emery”.

As for incomings, it is reported Marcus Rashford will only turn his Manchester United loan into a £40m permanent deal if Villa are in the Champions League.

His wages, reported to be in the region of £325,000-a-week, are also likely to be a problem for Villa, who are likely to have much more success in recruiting Marco Asensio from PSG.

The Telegraph add: “The Spain international, signed on loan from Paris St-Germain, is a more achievable deal and his transfer fee is not expected to be high.”
