Cork have beaten Roscommon by two points to book their place in an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final.

The Rebels came into this one knowing that only a win would see them progress to a preliminary quarter-final, while Roscommon needed just a draw to reach the knockout stages.

The Rossies started fast in Portlaoise, with Donie Smith - a late inclusion in the starting 15 - kicking a lovely score to start the game before Daire Cregg followed suit soon after.

Cork responded with three on the spin, but scores from Ciaráin Murtagh and Senan lambe levelled the game for the Rossies.

An Enda Smith score but the Connacht side ahead, but Cork bounced back with five scores on the trot to lead by one at the break. It could have been a much bigger lead however, with Ian Maguire twice blazing over from close range as Cork's struggles in front of goal continued.

The second-half was an epic encounter with huge swings of momentum for both sides.

The Rossies got a run of scores early in the second period to cut the gap to two, but Cork showed resilience to edge back in front.

Cork looked primed to cruise to victory midway through the second stanza when they reeled off four points on the spin to go six ahead, but Roscommon showed serious resolve to get back into the and when Daire Cregg pointed in the final quarter, the gap was cut to two.

Roscommon piled on the pressure at the death but Cork held on to squeak through.
