A huge controversial church convention is returning to Leicestershire next month. Council bosses say "robust" plans will be in place to support residents and businesses after concerns were previously raised.
The Light and Life Church Convention, which attracts Travellers from around the country, will take place in Market Harborough for the third year in a row, with the massive convention set to be held on private land off Gallow Field Road. Harborough District Council (HDC) says due to the nature of the event, no licenses or permissions are required to be applied for by organisers and or granted by the council.
The major event has sparked controversy during its previous Leicestershire dates. In 2023, pubs and businesses in and around the town reportedly closed amid fears of anti-social behaviour spilling out from the event. A HDC report later found that "scaremongering" online had made shoppers reluctant to head into town due to the event, leading to a loss in earnings for some.

Despite concerns raised at the time, police said that no cases of anti-social behaviour resulting from the 2023 festival had been recorded. Two reports were made in connection with last year's event, but officers said an "appropriate plan" was in place for 2025's event.
A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "Two reports of antisocial behaviour were received in relation to last year’s event. The first report concerned the inconsiderate parking of vehicles in Gallow Field Road.
"The second report concerned a child kicking one of the vehicles where no damage was caused. The force is aware of the event this year and – as was the case in 2024 – an appropriate policing plan is in place."
Officials on the district council are also preparing for the event. A spokesperson said it was looking to ensure the convention was run in a "smooth" fashion for all in Market Harborough.
The HDC spokesperson said: “This is the third year that the showground has hosted this event. As in previous years, the council will be facilitating event planning meetings with the event organisers and key agencies, including the police, to ensure robust plans are in place to support the smooth running of the event for our residents and businesses.
"We will also hold a meeting with local businesses as it’s important that businesses have the opportunity to raise any questions they have and make preparations for the increase in numbers of people in the local area.”
The Light and Life Church Convention will return to the Market Harborough Showground from Saturday, July 19 to Friday, July 25.
