Alan Titchmarsh says he's unsure what he'll be doing in the next coming years, after recently scaling back on his commitments.

The 76-year-old describes gardening as his "lifesaver" and "happy place" for many years, and hopes he can continue to do it for as long as possible.

Back in May, the ITV star revealed he had adjusted his schedule for a better balance of work commitments and family life.

By doing this, he has opted to no longer work on Fridays and occasionally Mondays.

His current projects include hosting his Gardening Club series and Love Your Weekend on ITV, as well as his new YouTube channel, Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh.

While he plans to work for as long as he can, Alan says he's unsure what the next five years holds.

"I honestly don’t know. Every day is a bonus. I don’t feel 76," he told Country Living magazine.

"I feel 40-odd and I just relish the opportunity to enjoy people’s company, to enjoy my garden and to find something stimulating in each day."

Speaking further about his love for the outdoors, he said: "I see gardening as a sheet anchor in life. It’s my lifesaver.

"That’s what I do and everything else is an add-on. I am out in my garden as much as possible, in between writing and broadcasting. It's my happy place."

As for his health, Alan insists gardening and walking a lot keeps him fit.

He also previously revealed that he doesn't overeat, though doesn't restrict himself too much.

Recently speaking to Reach PLC, he said: "I owe everything to good luck and a following wind!

"I love my work, I love being outdoors in my garden, I have a hugely supportive family.

"I enjoy my food and drink - in moderation of course - and above all I laugh a lot. It's worked for me."

In 2020, Alan said he had undergone a medical procedure to help with his painful knees, following many years of gardening.

He told Lifestyle Daily, he shared: “Yes, I get a bit of backache from 60 years of gardening, but I’m very lucky. My knees have both been sorted out, not replaced, just strimmed out.

“I had a couple of arthroscopies, where they put this little thing in – like a strimmer – and it cuts off the frayed bits. I had the last one about three years ago. I can kneel, I’m fighting fit now.”

Along the way, Alan has had his long-term wife Alison by his side for support.

The couple have been married for over 50 years and share two daughters, Polly and Camilla, as well as four grandchildren.

Alan cites his family as one of the reasons why he has decided to scale back on his commitments.

He told Woman's Weekly magazine: "It's the old cliché, but you can't get it back", referring to the precious time spent with loved ones. "My oldest grandchild has just hit 13 and you think, 'Oh crumbs! I've got a teenager as a grandchild now'."

Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh airs weekly at 9.30am on ITV and ITVX, followed by Alan Titchmarsh's Gardening Club.
