Who Wants to Be a Millionaire star loses big after 'torturous' question and fans are floored
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire viewers were left 'screaming' at their screens as a guest lost out on £32,000 during a celebrity special of the ITV quiz show
Viewers of ITV's 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' found themselves vocally responding to the telly as a contestant missed out on £32,000.
In a star-studded repeat episode broadcasted Saturday (June 14), Dion Dublin was the second stirrer taking a shot at winning cash for charity.
Holding £16,000 already, the ex-footie legend and telly presenter faced the £32,000 question: 'Which of these events did not occur in the 1990s?'. The choices presented were: John Major becomes PM, Dolly the sheep is born, Eden Project opens, and FA Premier League founded.
Dublin mulled it over before choosing to use the 50/50 lifeline and make a call to his pal, leaving just John Major and Eden Project as remaining options.
Phoning his 'money man' Marco, spectators were perched on the edge of their seats as his mate inadvertently nudged him towards the incorrect pick, John Major.
"I think, I'm pretty sure he said John Major. So I'll go with Marco, I'm going to be confident because he knows his stuff.", he declared, while host Jeremy Clarkson covered his visage with his palm, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Upon delivering the tough news and quipping "you need a new accountant", Clarkson presented the guest a consolation prize of £1,000 for his charity — standard practice on the celeb edition of the quiz. "Torturous" he remarked, as the celebrity ambled off stage.
Disbelief filled social media when viewers saw the unfortunate phone-a-friend moment. A Twitter user exclaimed: ""NOOOOOOOO!IT'S NOT JOHN MAJOR! #whowantstobeamillionaire."
A second viewer was befuddled by Dion Dublin's lack of knowledge, remarking: "How does Dion Dublin not know this? It's actually worrying! !"
Another disconcerted fan responded with: "Oh no! ! ! He was doing so well up to that point..." Furthermore, Joseph shared his dismay, exclaiming: "NOOOOO. Oh Dion.."
Earlier in the evening, journalist and presenter Steph McGovern secured a hefty £125,000 for her chosen charity on the game show.
Meanwhile fellow journalist and news anchor Lucrezia Millarini walked away with £16,000.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is broadcast on ITVX, Sundays at 8pm.
