Virgil van Dijk has declared it is an 'absolute privilege' to play for Liverpool as he reflected on a memorable campaign. The Dutchman was instrumental in helping the Reds to become Premier League champions.

Van Dijk only missed one top-flight match last season as his side won the league by 10 points.

However, that game was the 3-2 defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex, by which point his side had already been crowned champions.

And now reflecting on a memorable campaign, Van Dijk has shared a message, as well as images and videos from the season, on Instagram.

In his message, the Reds skipper wrote: “Almost forgot that this was the whole point… It’s an absolute privilege to play for you Reds!

"Thanks to each one of you that helped making this season so special.”

Van Dijk, who was named Liverpool captain in 2023 following Jordan Henderson's departure, headed into the season with his Anfield future up in the air as he was entering the final year of his contract.

However, after months of speculation, the centre-back, who has made 319 appearances for the club since joining from Southampton back in January 2018, finally signed a new two-year deal back in April.

Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, Van Dijk said: "It was always Liverpool. "That was the case.

"It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.

"There wasn't any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family.

"I'm one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser - I'm really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.

"It's a proud feeling, it's a feeling of joy. It's just incredible.

"The journey I've had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I'm so happy."
