Motorists will be hit by miles of diversions as a section of the main Leicestershire road will be closed. Warnings are now in place for drivers ahead of the closures.

Leicestershire County Council has created the diversion to cope with the closure along a small section of Rockingham Road in Market Harborough. The road will be shut to all traffic, leading to travel disruption.

To cope, the county council has set out a six-mile "proposed alternative diversion route" that would take traffic all the way out to the town's bypass. The closure is necessary for National Grid to dig up the road to install new power lines in the area.

The county council's highways department has also agreed to various restrictions on parking throughout this month to allow work elsewhere in the town.

In a statement, the council said: "Leicestershire County Council Highways has agreed to a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order for public safety for National Grid to undertake new electricity supply works. A road closure will be in force on Rockingham Road between Great Bowden Road to Avon House car park entrance.

"The proposed alternative diversion route will be via St Marys Road, The Square, High Street, Leicester Road, Harborough Road, Market Harborough Bypass and vice versa."

The closure will be in place across the weekend of Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. More information, including on the diversion route, can be found on the one.network website.
