Andy Robertson would become the first player in over a decade to transfer between Atletico Madrid and Liverpool if a move materialises this summer. Javi Manquillo was the last, joining the Reds on a two-year loan deal that ended after only one.

Moves were more common back then, though, with Dani Pacheco loaned there before spending that same season at Rayo Vallecano. Much like Liverpool as part of the Manquillo deal, Atletico could have made that move permanent, which they ultimately did not decide to do.

That unsuccessful switch came 18 months after Maxi Rodriguez joined the Reds on a free transfer. He was the second straight Atletico captain Liverpool signed after acquiring Fernando Torres for £20million, plus Luis Garcia.

That makes it five players who have moved directly from one to the other, with Robertson potentially taking that tally to half a dozen. However, the left-back leaving could begin renewed business between the two clubs rather than being a one-off.

Atletico are reportedly considering Darwin Nunez this summer, according to The Athletic. Liverpool are also said to be interested in signing Julian Alvarez after links last year when the striker left Manchester City.

Diego Simeone even name-checked the Reds when claiming the best clubs "have to want him". That comment came after having it put to him while in conversation with the Argentine newspaper, La Nacion, that everyone wants Alvarez now.

"Everything is logical; I can't imagine any other scenario," Simeone responded. "Julian is 25 years old, he's an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with hierarchy.

"How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool... the best have to want him.

"And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. Why? Because he's ours.

"And since he's ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy."
