Former Leeds United midfielder Gary McAllister has echoed the mantra of chairman Paraag Marathe by pointing to the club’s recruitment team as biggest transfer weapon for Premier League survival.

Marathe says the Whites must “nail” their transfers this summer and has pledged to back Daniel Farke in the transfer market by maximising spending limits. Additionally, around £120million has been drummed up by the release of more shares to shareholders, with part of this figure to go towards recruitment.

Earlier this summer, the exit of CEO Angus Kinnear sparked a boardroom reshuffle. Robbie Evans moved into the role of managing director with Adam Underwood being promoted to sporting director.

Underwood will essentially be the face of the club when it comes to transfers and will conduct 80% of the initial recruitment dialogue.

Targets are drawn up through a mixture of data analysis, scouting and coaching recommendations before options are slimmed down to a shortlist as deeper profile reports are conducted.

The data team has expanded, having been virtually non-existent before the 49ers took the reins. Meanwhile, Underwood - who has been at the club for more than a decade - is admired by his colleagues and many away from Leeds.

McAllister - a key part of the team that last won the top flight for Leeds in 1992 - believes the owners have put in a good structure with the right people in place.

“I think there's good people at the club,” he told Leeds Live . “There's new investment. And there's some clever people in the background there in recruitment, which is going to be very, very key for the club.”

On Farke, McAllister added: “The thing is, there's a manager there who's very equipped and knows the movement from the Championship to the top league.

“He'll be, I'm sure along with all the staff, be searching all over the world to bring people that can make the United better and competitive going up into the top division.”

The last manager to win the top division with Leeds, the great Howard Wilkinson, hailed the progress Farke has shown in his two years at the club. “I don't have any advice, I'm sure he knows the challenges that he faces. I just wish him all the best,” the 81-year-old shared with Leeds Live.

“To have done what he's done is an achievement. Just look at the stats these days. Look at the turnover in manager’s jobs. It's no longer full of people at the top who will be patient and wait for things to happen.

“So to go somewhere and immediately create a positive feeling and have a positive impact requires a lot of skill, a lot of hard work, a lot of common sense, a lot of perseverance and a lot of the ability to take knocks, pick yourself up and get on with it again.”
