Mateo Joseph says he has yet to speak with Leeds United about his future but has acknowledged there is a “lack of clarity” about his next steps, stopping short of closing down a potential exit.

The striker, speaking ahead of Spain’s clash with England in the Under-21 European Championships quarter-finals on Saturday, underlined that he is looking to play more often next season.

Having started last season as the main striker, Joseph ended up losing his place to Joel Piroe before seemingly slipping down the pecking order behind Patrick Bamford during the run-in. None of his 11 league starts came in 2025, despite playing in 39 Championship matches.

As a result of this and the fact Leeds are due to further bolster their attacking options this summer, Joseph has been tipped for an exit - which has only been reinforced by the signing of Lukas Nmecha. Real Betis and French club Strasbourg are known admirers of Joseph.

The 21-year-old - who has a contract until 2028 - has now opened up on his current situation, admitting he and Leeds are yet to discuss his future. “The lack of clarity about my future doesn’t affect me,” Joseph told AS.

“I’m very focused on the tournament, and I’ll have to talk to Leeds, with whom I haven’t yet. Then whatever has to happen will happen, which is certainly the best thing for everyone. I’ll be ready for the opportunities they give me, wherever they may be.”

He added: “We [Leeds] achieved our goal as a team, but I personally want to be more involved in the final stretch of the season. I think I need more participation to continue developing as a player.

“The season has just ended, and we have to stop and evaluate. We’ve been promoted to the Premier League. We’ll see what the club says, but I want to play more to continue growing.”

Joseph was then asked about playing alongside those in the Spain senior squad at club level, and namely Isco at Real Betis. “There are many players in the Spanish national team that I’d like to play with. It would mean I’m at a very big club,” he said.

“We’ll see what happens. For now, I’m focused on the European Championship, and my goal next year is to be more involved.”
