Insiders say Anglo American is hoping to get £4bn for De Beers, whose diamonds are worn by celebrities including Rita Ora (pictured).

Anglo American (OTCQX:AAUKF) plans to sell some of its legacy assets, notably its diamond business, De Beers, South Africa-based Anglo American Platinum, and steelmaking coal assets.

Mining giant Anglo American plans to spin off its diamonds arm De Beers, as part of its defences against at $43billion takeover bid from rival BHP.

Anglo American shares fell over 3% early Tuesday after it announced plans to spin off its highly prized De Beers diamond business.

The announcement comes after Anglo American rejected a £34bn takeover bid from rival BHP.

“The price difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds at retail is growing fast, accelerating consumer awareness that they are fundamentally very different products.”
