Snake was comparable in size to extinct Titanoboa, researchers say

Fossil vertebrae unearthed in a lignite mine are the remains of one of the largest snakes that ever lived, a monster estimated at up to 15m in length — longer than a T. rex — that prowled the swamps of India around 47-million years ago.

It is comparable in size to Titanoboa, a snake that existed in Colombia some 60 million years ago. It was over one tonne in weight and almost 43 feet long.

The pup developed a severe infection after being bitten in a busy park and the vet believes the marks are by an adder.

“Considering its large size, Vasuki was a slow-moving ambush predator that would subdue its prey through constriction,” said Debajit Datta, who is a co-author on the study.
